A Guide to Access Control System Features & Benefits

Welcome to our Access Control System Features Video Guide. Access Control Systems consist of four major components. The first is the controller. The second are the card readers. The third are the doors and locks. And the final component is the Access Control Management software solution.

Here’s an example of Access Control Management software that will allow you to integrate video from your video surveillance system to the access control system. In the upper portion of the screen, we can see a matrix of multiple cameras that are viewing live-view video. In the lower portion of the screen, you can see the access monitor that allows you to view specific access events, whether they’re access denied, alarms or grants, the information about the date and time, the entrance that that occurred at, the badge or card number that was registered during that event, and the person that that card is assigned to.

When you choose any one of these events, you will also be able to playback video feeds from your DVR of that event. Also, at any point in time when you choose one of these events you can pull up the information window. Here’s an example of one that covers an access granted. Here’s an example of one that covers an access denied. It will give you the information about the card and the reader.

The software will allow you to setup specific times, schedules, as well as holiday events. These can be grouped into access groups, which can then be assigned to cards. These can be configured to allow you to assign different doors different permissions for each individual access group that can then be assigned to specific cards, which are then applied to specific employees. You have the individual cards that you can edit. As well as the card holders, that you can enter, create and log staff information on. This is our controller, and we can choose individual doors and configure and setup the settings for those doors. This particular device allows you control it via network. You can specify door entrances. You can also have the system track as a time clock for your employees. You can trigger alarm events in case the door is held open for a set period of time, forced open, tampered with, a fire alarm goes off or if access is denied. This is where you can also specify what camera view is associated with which door.

You also have reporting capabilities that will allow you to pull up reports from various events in you Access Control System. We can search by card number, employee or card holder. So, for example, I want to view all card punches directions in and out for today, for a specific employee. I can then just hit search, and I will have snapshots, as well as video playback. When you open up video playback, it will start it the moment that the scan occurred in the system. Now, if you want to preview the previous minute or the previous five minutes, on the right hand side of the screen, you can choose the arrows that will take you back or forward from that time frame. Here we see the video preceding the actual scan event.

You also, through this web interface, have access to the card list, the card holder list, any alarms that have been triggered on your system and your event log. You can also track an IO log for IO events where the access control system can trigger alarms, sirens, lights. Any number of things that can be triggered by a relay can then be switched and activated just by a swipe of a card over a reader.
